Sexual Violence Case Review Team

Based on the widely publicized 2017 Globe & Mail “Unfounded series” of sexual assaults, violence against women experts developed a Violence Against Women Advocate Case Review process for sexual assault investigations.
From 2017-2019 Violence Against Women Advocates worked with Ontario police services and the Privacy Commission to develop a Sexual Assault Investigations best practises frame work which was released in December of 2019. This Framework is endorsed by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and KRPF will take part in the pilot project.
The framework is an advocate-based, victim centered approach towards improving police response to sexual violence; striving to achieve the best possible outcomes for victims of sexual violence. The case review team will be reviewing the files that are not referred for charges, including unfounded.
The case review team will be comprised of human service providers who are community advocates from agencies that deliver direct services to victims of sexual violence such as KVDVO, Saint John Sexual Assault Response Team etc.
KRPF will work with the review team to ensure gaps are filled in investigations. Front line human service providers who are familiar with victims of sexual violence will be able to provide a different lens on these cases to promote investigative excellence in this area, as there is always room for improvement and opportunities to adopt best practices. The aim is to improve service delivery and have the best possible outcomes when it comes to sexual violence cases.
